Preventative Maintenance

As with many systems regular maintenance is required to ensure performance and reliability over an extended period of time. This is very true in the case of a network server. As such All-Tasks offer an annual ‘Preventative Maintenance’ program to provide appropriate on-going support.

On a monthly basis (more frequently if required,) a senior technician will remotely connect to the server and perform a range of maintenance functions. By regularly monitoring and maintaining the server it is possible to detect a small issues that otherwise unnoticed, could potentially lead to a systemic failure.

1-Year Server Preventative Maintenance

Monthly Remote maintenance including:

  • Check overall performance of server
  • Update Anti-Virus software on Server // Virus Scan Server
  • Storage space check
  • Hard Disk Mirroring check
  • Hard Disk Integrity check
  • Test Tape Backup
  • Clean Tape Drive with cleaning tape
  • Update recovery disks
  • Check event log for error message
  • Checking firewall configuration and log files and reconfigure as required
  • Advise any additional maintenance required

Ultimately many clients are satisfied at the peace of mind they receive knowing that a senior technician with many years of experience is actively monitoring and maintaining their system.

Backing up your System Data

The safety of the company information stored on your Server(s) and users workstations is clearly of utmost importance. The unintentional loss of some or all of your company data will have significant consequences for any businesses. - This was highlighted when a theft resulted in the total loss of important information stored on a number of user’s workstations at one client’s site.

Although you will already be carrying out daily backups, it is important to regularly check that your backup hardware is functioning correctly and that all your important data is being included in the backup process.

In addition to checking your daily back up reports to see that backup jobs have been completed successfully, a full system restore check should be done periodically as part of a disaster recovery plan. For customers who are unsure how to go about this, we can organise an appropriate test if requested.

For those customers who are currently using our preventative maintenance services we do check that the tape backup hardware is functioning correctly. This does not prove that your backup data is functional and that all data is on the backup media.

It may be a wise strategy to introduce a secondary backup method for important files. For example a device as simple as a USB memory key could be effectively used to backup one user’s critical files. Many devices and technologies exist to allow us to devise a strategy that will be appropriate to your business.

Please contact our office to arrange an obligation free discission on how we can better secure your companies critical data.

Summary Checklist:

- Backup reports are checked daily & media is rotated.

- Backups are tested by restoring data on a routine basis (at least once a month).

- Backup media is kept off-site or in a fire-proof safe.

- Identify all important data and confirm that it is being backed up.

- Server(s) has a RAID configuration and it is checked regularly.

- The server(s) is connected to a UPS.

- Devise a disaster recovery plan and routinely test.

- Up to date Anti-virus software is running on server(s).

- Secondary backup method is introduced.
