One popular method to connect branches is to introduce an Internet based 'Virtual Private Network' (VPN). Essentially all of the sites are permanently connected to the Internet and then encrypted tunnles are used to connect the offices across the Internet. Firstly each site will have access to the Internet for accessing e-mail and using the world-wide-web. Using the same connections the two satellite offices will have connectivity back to head-office.

Using VPN technology, it is also possible for management and the company directors to remotely access the server from anywhere that a computer connected to the Internet has the appropriate security software installed. The primary use is to connect from home back to the office. Secondly it is common to configure this remote access on a notebook computer for a travelling manager to access the network from hotels etc.
